There will be a host of early Hockney paintings. Larson & Bridges knew him from his early days and bought his early work. They ought to fetch a fortune. Larson went to Tokyo when the Imperial was about to be demolished, and bought a lot of the dinnerware. It was undoubtedly the later, simplified design by the time he got there, but it still should be a valuable collection. Sorry, Reidy, but Jimmy's bow tie collection was bought by Bill Nye, the Science Guy.
[Roderick, I've just read Bill Nye's "Unstoppable," a most uplifting look at our world and what it's coming to. Everything from the microscopic to the galactic is touched upon, with enlightening glimpses into multiple disciplines and simple, straightforward explanations of natural and man-made processes and developments. A refreshing optimism pervades the text. Nye says in the afterword that he's been writing this book "since I was in high school." His take-away: change is unstoppable, and so is our collective will and our evident ability to adapt and thrive.]

Matt, I was talking about the pattern of the dinnerware (in the coffee shop, not the formal dining room). In the 20s, Noritaki produced dinnerware designed by FLW. They continued to provide the dinnerware for as long as the hotel was open, simplifying the design after the war. This simplified pattern is what Larson would have had available when he went their in the 1960s. Much of the stuff made for Imperial, including furniture, was put on sale at a department store in Tokyo, including the dinnerware. Larson showed Ginny Kazor his collection; she said it was very extensive, though I don't believe it included any of the coffee/tea pots or other silverware, just plates and dishes.
FLW Furniture to be Sold Separately ...
First confirmation I've seen that the FLW furniture will be sold as a separate lot ...
Superman Star Donates His Frank Lloyd Wright Home to CharityWright-designed furniture is being sold separately, but I’m hoping the buyer of the house keeps original pieces in their original places.

From an e-mail exchange between me and the head of Los Angeles Modern Auctions:
"Hello Mr. Loughrey
I was wondering if you could answer a question about the upcoming auction of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Sturges House: will the original Frank Lloyd Wright furniture from the house be auctioned with the house itself? Or, will the pieces be auctioned off individually? Thank you."
"David:
I apologize for this delay in replying to your email that came in over the holiday.
Yes, the original Frank Lloyd Wright designed furniture that belongs to the Estate will be included in the purchase of the house.
If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Shannon Loughrey
Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)"
So, it would appear by the response that the furniture will be included with the house sale - and not sold off individually. Let us hope that is the case.

Frank Lloyd Wright House in Los Angeles Will Be Auctioned
(from the article)
"Los Angeles Modern is auctioning the house with two original dining chairs, various built-ins and Mr. Larson’s extensive Wright and Lautner archival material. The rest of its contents will be divided up; stools with X-shaped bases, boxy tables, pyramidal floor lamps and flanged armchairs designed by Wright or Lautner have estimates starting at a few thousand dollars each."
Sort of not quite the same as I was told by one of the owners of LAMA in the email two posts up.

VIDEO: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Sturges House, Furniture In Brentwood Up For Auction
(from the article)
"A separate auction will include 75 lots of original furnishings by Frank Lloyd Wright, fine art, decorative art, and design collected by Larson and Bridges over their lifetimes."
Also, seemingly goes against what I was told above.
Of course, the other aspect of this is that Larson may have set up his estate such as the auction house (nor anyone else, for that matter) has absolutely no say in how things are to be auctioned off - they just have to follow the mandates of the will/trust/estate.

The catalogue is now online... With the exception of two dining chairs, the movable furniture is being sold separately, some items designed by Wright, others by Lautner. See lots #86 through 98:

Only 15 large for an origami chair? If only I didn't have that pesky mortgage to worry about ...peterm wrote:The catalogue is now online...
