Henderson and its kissin' cousin, Hickox, are two of my favorite early Prairie Houses. The plans of their major rooms are so open and expansive, yet at the same time tidy. I've always wanted to see interiors of Hickox, but never have. Has anyone?

I hadn't seen interiors of Henderson before. The most noticeable element, nearly unique for Wright, is the very prominent pair of overhead beams in the main space, resting comfortably if ponderously on the equally-strong ledge that makes a head for the door openings in the room.

I wonder if they were always painted . . .

Probably, but surely tinted. I would also bet that trim is missing which would make a difference. The rest of the house has considerable detailing.

The floor is a bit of a distraction. If it is the original material, it may have been stained dark and is now the victim of a sanding and bleaching (?) event.

The décor is clearly Mission-inspired. (Do you suppose this is a staged interior ?) The patterned frieze is amusing. Certain elements of the interior architecture have a Craft or Mission feel: those big beams, the arched fireplace opening, and the vertically slatted or spindled panels, some of them in the window band . . .

The massive beams were undoubtedly always painted the same color as the ceiling. The photos in the Alans, Wintraub & Hess' "FLW Prairie Houses," pp 38-47, show a much warmer interior than the real estate photos, though that may be just the lighting. The frieze is distracting. Given the opportunity, FLW would have taken brush and paint in hand and obliterated them himself.

Prairie home owners seem to have such difficulty in sensitively appointing their homes.

With a darker floor, and that painted frieze obliterated, this one wouldn't be too bad. The furnishings are mostly alright, aren't they ?
