Articles: Republican Convention to have a 'FLW touch'

Post by DavidC »

(last line in the article: "Schriefer boasted in particular of the modern backdrop onstage of speakers, which he described as a "Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired piece of architecture."")

Republican convention will feature tribute to Ron Paul

("Even the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired convention stage, which organizes described as aiming to be “America’s Living Room,")

Considering they are expecting a hurricane, perhaps it will leak.

That's a good one. I guess we'll just have to see what the stage looks like. Down here in Florida, they have shown construction video, and FLW never came to mind during those viewings. But it was mainly plywood, and not the finished product.

If the RNC really wanted a "Frank Lloyd Wright inspired" look for the set of their upcoming convention, they should have hired Stafford Norris and his crew.

Maybe they should resurrect an adaptation of the unrealized Ayn Rand house design. Paul Ryan is/was an admirer of Rand...

The Rand connection is overblown. FLW did not like Rand; he considered her stupid, at least according to John Geiger. FLW consorted with Rand for the commission, to which he gave short shrift, assuming (correctly) that she wouldn't follow through.

As to FLW's politics, they were all over the map, but as a true individualist, he was closer to a real form of Republicanism than anything remotely associated with today's version of liberalism.

I'm not sure how well Wright would fit within the "family values" theme, other than that he liked to have lots of families.

I read that he admired and supported Adlai Stevenson, (a fellow Unitarian...) whom I would consider a post New Deal Democrat. But you're right, Wright's politics were indeed all over the map.

"Family values" as perceived by the religious right, which are blatantly discriminatory, are not the family values real Republicans espouse. The party was hijacked by Pat Robertson.

I'm not seeing it. Except, whatever that material is looks like wood, and Frank Lloyd Wright also used wood in his structures.

Oh yeah, I see it. Who could miss the Taliesin West corner stair, the abstracted canvas panels flying above the stage...like the RNC are blowing the roof off (or is that Hurricane Issac?). All that is missing is some desert concrete on the central podium and a petroglyph covered rock at its corner.

We shouldn't laugh too much, the DNC will probably come up with something just as banal.

looks prairie and usonian.. but seriously Wright would gawk at the use of his name for a stage design that doesn't resemble anything Wright like. It doesn't evoke a living room, well unless you are rich lol
