Furniture

Post by classic form »

Can all that furniture be original? Have I missed a previous discussion on this?

Please please please let there be an open house!

I am pretty sure that everything is from when the house was built, and the original owners stayed in the house until recently. I seem to remember watching a video interview with Mr. Brown not too long ago...

I just found the previous thread, but am unable to access the documentary video:

Anyone?

Thanks, I jumped the gun before searching.

What do you think of the price? Sold in 2002 for 350,000usd.

Something is a bit off about this design. Can't put my finger on it, but I think it's the use of plane concrete block with the wood ceiling. Doesn't jibe for me and I've liked the use of concrete block in other houses like Brandes.

I guess there are probably more interesting Wright designs than this, but few located on such an amazing lakeside site, in near original, well maintained condition, complete with the original furniture... But I personally love the contrast of the gray block and the cypress(?) ceiling.

As for the price, it seems like a steal when compared to other Wright houses available right now, but I know nothing about Kalamazoo prices...

Great house at a really great price!

For once the realtor listing contains a sufficient amount of pictures rendered at a reasonable size.

another listing:

I second Paul. This is one of my favorite houses, full stop.

It's a joy to be in. The space moves wonderfully. The fireplace is gorgeous. The ceiling in the bedroom at the end of the gallery is a surprise.

I don't know about any condition issues. The house is built into the hill on one side, with gallery below grade, so I don't know if water is ever an issue. The block and the ceiling work well together. This house is a gem. And this seems like a great price for it.

in response to my inquiry regarding an open house:

Paul

Thank you for your inquiry about 2806 Taliesin Drive. The home owners have requested that all showings be by appointment only so there will not be any open houses for the public. Let me know if I can answer any questions about the property.

The current owners purchased the home from Eric and Anne Brown in 2002 along with most of the FLW designed furniture. They have updated the roof, heating system, lighting but maintained the integrity of this Registered FLW home.

Best regards
Mary

It appears that the floors are grey concrete, and not the more usual red. Anyone know the story? How does it look in the flesh?

Quite amazing how much better the concrete block houses in snowy, rainy climes have fared than the four out here in sunny Southern California, where water is such a minimal problem, raining, as it does, about two or three times a year. Eppstein in Galesburg seems to be the only one in the North with block problems.

Brown is plainer and less "architectural" perhaps than McCartney, Levin or Meyer, but it is a stunning piece of work. The wood ceiling is spectacular. The house is a bit darker than the interior shots suggest, but a beautiful house, nonetheless.

Video on Eric Brown house

Post by riordanmr »

The aforementioned documentary on the Eric Brown house is available in DVD or download format from:
www dot glaserproductions dot com
They have a free 9-minute excerpt; however, my browser was unable to play it. With some sleuthing, I was able to find a direct link to the free excerpt:
streaming.deliriumfilms dot com/glaserproductions dot com/browncap2.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf
It looks pretty good, though the excerpt focuses almost entirely on the neighborhood rather than the house.

As an aside, unlike Paul R above, I was disappointed at the quality of the realtor's photos in the listing. But they're better than nothing.

* Note: the forum is not allowing me to post the actual URLs, so I had to mangle them.

Paul just says that the photos are bigger and there are more of them than we usually get with listings. Not that they are high quality. It's too bad listing photos are not better everywhere as it is sometimes the only documentation a place gets.
