George Lucas / FLlW inspired office

Post by Randolph C. Henning »

In today’s USA Today there is a picture on the front page of Section D of filmmaker George Lucas looking “out a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired window at his Lucasfilm Big Rock Ranch in Nicasio, CA. Supposedly, according the article, it’s part of “an expansive Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired office at Big Rock Ranch, part of his 6,000-acre retreat north of San Francisco. Curious for sure. Anybody know anything about this? It might be the real thing or a token built wantabe. But you'd think with the money at play it ought to be pretty close to the real thing . . .

Never heard about it. The main house, built early in the life of the property (the 'eighties), is a Victorian manse.

There's this: http://www.usatoday.com/video/life/1367574596001

Essentially one view of an interior -- with lots of footage of the latest Lucas project.

Mr Henning forwards this rather magnificent photo of the complex.

Block off all but the far right end of the complex and what do you have?

Gee Whiz ... Essentially, you have the front elevation of the Ward Willits Residence from 1901, that's what you have.

Yes this is well known in the Bay Area. Did not realize it was not so well known to Wright chatterers. All in all, not very convincing.

In addition, the interiors of the Lucas complex at the Presidio in San Francisco (banal neo-colonial/neo whatever) buildings have "try to be" Prairie style interiors, particularly in the auditorium. But banal is the governing word.

Stafford Norris III kindly forwards this link to the contractor's slide show of the complex. The architect was Gensler, there are five separate structures housing 200 Lucasfilm multimedia employees, and the parking is below grade. The satellite view reveals that the pond is manmade, with a dam to the south. One of the slideshow views was apparently made when the pond was partially filled . . .

The hanging light fixtures in the cafeteria (?) are handsome.
