FLW designed buildings transformed into Bed & Breakfasts

Post by flwromanza »

Is there a previous thread or other source with a comprehensive list of all those Wright buildings which are available for overnight rentals? Does anyone out there have such a list?

Another property that should be added to that list is the Schultz Residence in St. Joseph, MI, which began offering overnight stays just recently.

And according to recent reports, the Bach Residence in Chicago will soon join this list, and it has been suggested by someone involved with the Pope-Leighey Residence that overnight stays may be offered there at some point in the future.

Interestingly enough, until the Park Inn Hotel re-opened, all opportunities available for overnight stays have been in non-Prairie Style buildings. Once the Bach Residence begins taking guests, we will now have two Prairie Style places in which to have an overnight stay experience.

It should be noted that the Prairie Style Cheney Residence in Oak Park was operated as a B&B for a number of years, but has not been available for overnight night stays for several years now.

The Gordon House is considering offering over-night stays after they finish their current restorations.

Didn't know the Palmer House was open for things like this, very cool. The prices at the Price Tower seem somewhat reasonable at first glance too.

Not precisely Wright for the purposes of this thread, but would be a good place to stay while visiting Taliesin. Reasonable rates as well.

I think it's more Usionian than Prairie.

This past year has featured the full spectrum of MAK Center art and architecture initiatives. From dramatic reinterpretations of the Schindler House during Schindler Lab: Round One to the expansive exhibition project 91 92 93 that included a performance, a play, a film screening, a three-part installation, plus an artist-in-residence to a sell-out tour of John Lautner houses in celebration of his 100th birthday to Sympathetic Seeing, the first exhibition to examine the life's work of architectural historian Esther McCoy, the MAK Center has continued to deliver unique, high-quality programs that cross disciplinary boundaries.

We take our role in the Los Angeles cultural community seriously, seeking to make significant contributions to the discourses on art, architecture, and urban issues.

As we plan ahead for 2012, I am counting on your interest and support for the thought-provoking exhibitions and programs that we will be presenting at the Schindler House and beyond.

In 2012, the MAK Center's activities will include Duchamp the Messenger, a free form, ten-session seminar with art historian Thierry de Duve; a large-scale bamboo Ikebana installation in the Schindler House gardens created by the Sogetsu School of Ikebana; a film series organized by Thom Anderson with rare films about architecture; an exhibition exploring historical lectures by artists and architects; Schindler Lab: Round Two, an ongoing project in which Schindler's logic and methods are examined by local Los Angeles artists and architects; and much, much more.

Programs such as these would not be possible without our community's investment in the MAK Center.

Noticing the celebration of John Lautner's centennial, I realized 2011 was also the centennial of Edmund Teske. Too bad he didn't get recognized with a show.

Have any additional homes been added to this list? Did the Bach house actually become a B&B? And does anyone know if the Cheney house has returned to B&B status?
