Photographs of the Boynton House Garage

Post by pharding »

I am looking for photographs of the Boynton House Garage which was recently demolished. Does anyone have photographs of this original FLW garage?

I have a 1964 slide (quite discolored) showing the front and part of the side of the garage. I also took some digital pictures of the house in April 2011 with at least one shot that shows the garage, although it was taken from the rear street so it is at some distance away. Those digital pictures were previously posted on this site.

If I recall, in the original article in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle about a year ago on the current restoration of the house, there was a photo taken out of the rear bedroom window showing some of the garage including the copper gutter detailing. I believe that was also posted on this site.

From the state of work on the project in April, I was concluding that the owners may have reconsidered demolishing the garage.

I am happy to send you the 1964 slide, although a better source might be the Landmark Society of Western New York, who holds the historic easement on the house. ([email protected]).The E. D. there is Wayne Goodman.

The published FLlW drawings of the house show a large carriage house, a la Little, not the simple garage that was built, so I am not sure of the authorship of the garage. It has all the same detailing as the house, built in copper gutters, art glass windows and art glass garage doors.

Let me know.

"While reviewing Wright's drawings, Cosentino and Parker learned that some of the architect's plans for the property were never built or had been altered by prior owners. And their goal is to complete Wright's original vision.

"For instance, the garage on the property is not Wright's design. And the way it is positioned makes it difficult for a large modern vehicle to enter or back out. Since the garage also has structural damage, the couple sought and received permission from the city to demolish it. Cosentino and Parker plan to build a new garage more in keeping with Wright's vision."

Thank you guys. This is all very insightful as I sort through options for the Davenport garage.
