Mark DuBois' Klein House
Mark DuBois' Klein House
Amidst the overwrought decorating and palatial estates featured in the current issue of "Architectural Digest," there is an article with photos on New York architect Mark DuBois' Klein House near Santa Fe. In my opinion, the house beautifully evokes FLLW, with its extensive use of concrete and glass, flat roofs and open spaces, all in a desert landscape. The piece de resistance of the house is the living room's two exterior walls, which are purely structural glass -- the first use in America of triple-paned, mullion-free glass to support the roof, and, in Klein, to create an unimpeded vista of the New Mexican landscape. I cannot help but think that, were he alive, FLLW would have pioneered the use of structural glass in this country, and probably would have been using it extensively 5 years ago.
