I always loved this house. The long low public side is hard to beat. Great stone work also. Nice to see it is not going to leave us.

Hurray!!!!!! Glad to see that someone could take this on. Visited the house and was really intrigued! And Charles City is a great little town!

I guess one who purchases this house must deal with the good chance that it will flood again, requiring yet another partial rebuild at some point in the future (absent flood control measures not mentioned in this article that could be constructed). Maybe they are already budgeting for it...

this last 4th of July 2012 went to the Miller home in Charles City and took this picture from the outside. Any update regarding this home?
I see there are plans on a table and some equipment around.

What happened to that Sullivan bank that was caught in the same flood? Was that demolished?

It has not been demolished, but to the best of my knowledge it has not yet been refurbished/restored and is still closed. At the time of the floods it was in operation as a Wells Fargo branch, and had been restored quite extensively by the parent company within the previous 8-10 years.

My guess is that it's future disposition awaits the finalization of the plans for the proposed flood walls for downtown Cedar Rapids.

Years ago, when Mrs. Miller gave me a tour inside the house, an 8-inch copper lip (or hood) was hanging from the fireplace lintel. Mrs. Miller explained that the copper was installed because the fireplace didn't draw well. It's interesting to see that the copper is no longer there. Your photo suggests smoke has not discoloured the stone, either. I wonder if another solution to the smoking problem was installed, perhaps a fan?

I was there about 2weeks ago and the copper fireplace hood is sitting in the area of the living room where the built in radio and bench would have been on the floor.
