The Bradley House, Kankakee

Post by erban »

There have been some recent articles written about the Bradley House in Kankakee, IL that PrairieMod has discovered and we're wondering if any of you good folks have been out to the house in the past couple of months? Is there any news that can shared about the structure, restoration or owners? It appears that the structure will simply be stunning once it is completed.

For anyone who doesn't have much info on the Bradley House, this link will give you a quick run down: http://prairiemod.typepad.com/prairiemo ... wri_1.html

Hickox is a mystery. As virtually the first fully mature house by FLW, one might assume it would be the object of much attention, but to date there has never, to my knowledge, been a single interior photograph published. Its living room/dining room/ library is very much like Henderson, which followed it shortly, and was published for the first time in the new Houses book. In the recent show on Wright's glass, which travelled the country, the French doors from the Hickox living room were on display and identified as having come from the D. D. Martin House! Even though there were other Marin windows in the same show, and no one who knows anything at all about FLW could confuse the design of the two. Go figure.

Unfortunately the Bradley House suffered a major, but not fatal, fire several months ago. It originated in the attic above the second floor bedrooms which are above the first floor living room. The roof trusses in this area were severely damaged and they will require major repairs or replacement. Unfortunately the roof trusses carry the second floor structural system above the living room. This assemby has deflected and will require jacking and structural repairs. The owners have replication insurance so the house will be fully restored where it was damaged. The insurance company spent a month examining the attic looking for the cause. No conclusion was reached although it appears to be an electrical fire.

Prior to the fire the garage/barn was being restored and it was substantially complete when I last visited the house in December 05.
