"The portfolio proved to be a limited edition, because only 1,275 copies of the portfolio were printed, and Wright owned each copy. Wasmuth was granted less than 200 copies to distribute in Europe."

Who paid for the publication ? These sentences make it seem to be a so-called vanity publication -- paid for by the author. Knowing Wright, this cannot be. Why would Ernst Wasmuth invest in this deal; would his 200 copies pay for the entire run ?
