Wow. I find this a little shocking. I would have been much less surprised to hear that he had made a deal to purchase the bedroom wing, was removing the firewall between the two halves of the house and restoring accordingly.

I toured the home at a conservancy event (last year?), and was lucky enough to be in the group Dean Eastman was leading. His affection for the home was palpable, and the sweat and treasure he poured into it substantial.

I hope the new owners will be as generous about showing it off. Tomek, in the same town, changed hands in 2002 and, as far as I know, hasn't been open since.

That is a great price on a great house.

Makes me wonder if Dean and his wife are selling the big house and moving to the smaller, and very wonderful, coach house.

Good thought, Paul R. You might very well be on to something in light of the fact that the Coonley coach house is no longer on the market. Let's hope that is the case.

The owner of the Scottswood Road portion of the Coonley House is incredibly optimistic in pricing that property at $1.3 million in its current condition. Undoubtedly it will sit for 3 years and then sell at a reasonble number, $650,000.

"Together with the coach house and gardener's cottage, the estate is also the largest residential complex of Wright's years in Oak Park."

I wonder if the Martin complex (not counting the Barton house) doesn't have more covered footage -- though surely not more acreage ?

The Scottswood Road half(?) of the Coonley House is un-restored and is vastly overpriced. It has been on the market for several years already.

I don't understand why a book about Coonley has never been published. It is at least as good as, if not better than, any of the other Oak Park era houses. I still have never heard who was responsible for the alterations made when the main house was split in the 50s, or who designed the living room appended to the end of the original master bedroom wing.

At the conservancy event, we were told that Dean Eastman is writing a book on the restoration. We were given the impression that, at that time, it was pretty near completion.
