Wright Plus Travel Tips?

Post by Deke »

Hi,
I'm planning to attend the Wright Plus event this year and welcome any tips or advice on stuff to do in the Windy City. Places to stay (affordable)? Places to eat? I have been there a couple times, seen the Art Institute, Robie House, Unity Temple, and Home Studio. What other architectural marvels should not be missed? I'm also thinking of renting a car and driving to Racine which I believe is only a couple hours away. My pilgrimage to Johnson Wax. I think Spring Green is a bit too far a drive. Anyway, suggestions appreciated.

We love the Greek restaurant in Oak Park. Papa Spiro's, I think? It's on the main drag--the same street Unity Temple is on.

Racine - About 75 minutes from O'Hare Airport. Consider it. Worth it.

Spring Green - 3 hours from O'Hare Airport. Consider it. Worth it. If you allow the full day and drink plenty of coffee, you can see Madison and Spring Green in the same day. In fact, you have to - I think - go through Madison to get to Spring Green. If you have the time, stay the night in Madison.

Just a thought, you could fly to Madison for a small fee. That would save some time. And fly home from ORD. One way rentals via Hertz or National are not a big deal.

To do so, you will need to go through ORD.

Where to start?

How about the Chicago Architectural Foundation (CAF)? The CAF offers dozens of high quality tours in and around Chicago to suit almost any architectural interest. If the weather is nice, the Architectural River Cruise is great.

In Chicago proper there is:

*Glessner House Museum By HH Richardson
*Auditorium Building by Adler & Sullivan
*Charnley House by Sullivan & Wright
Lobby Of The Rookery Building By Wright & Drummond
*Campus Of IIT By Mies van der Rohe
*Millenium Park
Smith Stained Glass Museum On Navy Pier
*New Modern Wing @ Art Institute By Renzo Piano
Architecture Collection @ Art Institute
Lincoln Park Zoo/Lily Pond By Alfred Caldwell
Reliance Building/Hotel Burnham By Atwood & Burnham
Sears/Willis Tower Skydeck By SOM
Hancock Tower Skydeck By SOM
*Chicago Cultural Center-Largest LC Tiffany Stained Glass Dome In The World
#Krause Music Store Facade By L. Sullivan-Exterior Only
#Sullivan Center/Carson Pirie Scott-Exterior Only
Holy Trinity Cathedral By Louis Sullivan

*Indicates Tours Available
#Both Recently Restored

A little further out there is the Farnworth House by Mies v.d. Rohe in Plano, IL. Tours are offered, and it is about an hour SW of the Loop. The Muirhead House by FLW in Plato Center, IL, is operated as a B&B, and they also offer tours; about an hour west of the Loop, near Elgin. And the Dana-Thomas House by FLW is in Springfield, IL, about three hours south of the Loop. Tours offered, and worth the rather lengthy drive.

That's all I've got for now, but if I think of more I'll put up another post. Hopefully this gives you a good start.

Thanks for the list. I have learned Johnson Wax is only open for tours on Friday and Saturday, so I'm planning to be in Racine the day before the Oak Park tour.

The new Modern Wing of the Art Institute was completed last September. It is a great building by a great architect and has a great art collection.

Here is another great building to tour. The Charnley House by Adler and Sullivan which a young 20 something Frank Lloyd Wright worked on, under the supervision of Louis Sullivan. The building was restored by Skidmore Owings and Merill as both Owner and Restoration Architect.

Regarding Racine, has anyone been in the Hardy house? It must be a pretty neat house.

The Hardy house did not seem open to the public when I was there . If you go to Racine take Lakeshore Dr. You will pass 2 prairie houses on the way . The Hardy house is on the right as you come into the city .Check out Johnson wax and Wingspread. If you stay the night go to O&H Danish bakery on the way out of town. For the ultimate FLW experience continue to Spring Green . Stop in Madison for the Unitarian Meeting house and Mona Terrace (modern FLW inspired conference hall), but dot stay the night . Make reservations at the Usonian Inn in Spring Green .The owners are so nice and have great FLW stories.when you wake up you'll be ready for Taliesin.
