Frank Lloyd Wright: The List

Post by PrairieMod »

I'm in the early stages of formulating a new project that would involve the data of every still-standing Wright structure, as well as every lost Wright structure actually built. I need some help in making sure the lists are completely accurate. I figured this site would be the best place to make sure the lists are truly correct. It's been written that there were 532 structures built, with about 393 still existing (are these numbers correct?)

That said, here is the list so far for built and still-standing (Note: this list includes * next to museum installations of Wright structures):

Now comes the hard/fun part of the list. Does anyone have an accurate and complete list of the structures that were built but have now been torn down? A few are obvious (like the Larkin Building and the Imperial Hotel) but there are quite a few more that I don't have data on. Would the group be willing to help? I'll start it out and hopefully the list can be filled in as data is contributed:

Japan
Tokyo: Imperial Hotel

Illinois
Chicago: Midway Gardens

New York
Buffalo: The Larkin Administration Building

PrairieMod-

While I won't claim that this list of destroyed FLW structures is totally complete, I think it is inclusive of a substantial portion of said commissions. FYI, in this list I choose not to include any of Wright's "remodeling" projects. I hope this listing will provide a good head start towards the realization of your end goal.

A few that come to mind right away:

For built and still standing:

Wellington, OH - Mosher

For destroyed sites:

Japan - Imperial Hotel

Buffalo, NY - Larkin

Chicago, IL - Midway Gardens

A great reference for the destroyed structures is the Carla Lind book "Lost Wright - Frank Lloyd Wright's Vanished Masterpieces". It was first published in 1996, but the link is to the 2008 revised and expanded edition.

Wrightgeek, I notice on your list of destroyed buildings the R W Evans House; has that really been torn down? I know it was in a bad neighborhood, but I was unaware that it had been demolished. What a shame if so. That's one of the greats just waiting for the neighborhood to upgrade enough to warrant restoration.

RGrant-

Thanks for catching my error on the Evans Residence. It does in fact still stand, albeit in an altered state in the Beverly area of South Chicago. I will edit my list to correct this mistake.

God knows we have lost enough significant buildings in the Chicago area; I certaintly do not need to demolish any additional FLW structures here in cyberspace.

Thanks again for keeping me honest.

Regarding the Roloson Houses, they were significantly remodeled in 1981, with many of the character-defining-features identified in the 1977 National Register Nomination removed. A de-listing recommendation was made at the time of the rehabilitation.

The Beverly neighborhood is no longer a "bad" neighborhood. It contains quite a bit of architecture and sponsors and annual housewalk. As with almost all Chicago neighborhoods you don't have to go far to encounter a bad neighborhood. Even City of Oak Park is immediately west of the Austin neighborhood of Chicago.

The Kaufmann office at the Victoria and Albert Museum is off view, and the curators do not know when it might be displayed again.

An interesting design, and a mystery, is the T. E. Gilpin House in Oak Park, IL (M2/180-182). There is evidence that the house was built and later destroyed, but no solid proof. Other sources say it was just a project.

I believe you need the asterisk * next to the Little II Hallway at the MIA.

Also, I have heard the Lovness "House" was actually refered to as a Studio, not a House.

Indeed, the Moe and Mosher are still in controversy and the Wynant is now a weedy lot instead of a house.

Now, can we list which ones we have visited? You start.

There's a section through the Gilpin landing/pantry that shows the thickness of the ceiling above the pantry is, I believe, 3" total. The measurements are very hard for me to read, but that's what I recall. How would you construct a floor 3" thick to handle foot traffic?
