This is the earlier design, in which the satellite structure was placed south of the museum proper rather than to the north (left, as seen from Fifth Avenue and Central Park). The curious curved ramp parapets, also seen in the split model that was created, are a clue to this version.

The higher dome is a glass tube sphere the top half of which was to rotate while panels retracted to allow the observatory telescope access to the sky. The curator would impress dates here.

FLW scotched the dome because he couldn't get permission from the city to build it. He had built it at a reduced scale at S C Johnson, one of the major, delightful details of that magnificent structure.

So, an observatory at the Guggenheim ? The dome at JWax I suppose is the one over the ad department reception area . . .

We have one at FSC, and a proposed one . . . where else ?

Well - there is also a planetarium in this early Gugg scheme, it's directly under the Curator's Livingroom.
Labeled in the section above (third link down in first post)as "Ocular Chamber"

BTW - going thru the Gugg file, I am more appreciative ... or perhaps maybe stunned and amazed at how difficult this must have been to construct. Should be an oral or documented history on the process.
... an upward and outward expanding spiral ...? Every single "curvilinear foot" is different.

I seem to remember a story, no clue of it's accuracy, that during the construction of the Gugg there was no telephone at TWest. So the project crew would roll up the drawings and head to Phoenix, park at a pay phone, unroll the drawings on the hood of the car and "conference call" to New York. Any truth to that?
