I suppose that those who don't "get" the modern house---or modernism generally ?---are akin to those who don't get abstract art, or contemporary music ? Or is there no correlation . . .

It is. The red elements are a plus. Of course, different furnishings could be imagined. The insistent rectangularity of the architecture could be tempered---or complemented---by circular rugs of different sizes at the main seating clusters ?
