I miss the '50s coffee shops. Coffee Dan's had the best food, Googie's had the best architecture. (The one next to Schwab's was long closed by the time I made it to LA in 66.) I still dine at Norm's on La Cienega for nostalgia's sake. I still miss Carolina Pines at La Brea & Sunset with the most fetching Hollywood middle-aged, bleach-blond Wanna-Bes serving.

Ben Frank's, now Mel's Drive-in, is on the Sunset Strip between Londonderry Place and Sunset Plaza. It's a riff on the 'traditional' Googie's, and is in good shape, very popular. While showing David C. and his wife around, we had lunch there.
