For Sale: Wright-inspired house by Tom Kundig

Post by Stephen Cowdery »

In Bellvue, Washington: https://www.rsir.com/homes-for-sale/bel ... 5-1461605/
Echoing Frank Lloyd Wright's spirit, its exterior melds brick, mahogany, limestone, and copper. Inside, find Art Deco elegance with book-matched Honduran mahogany walls and elegant African mahogany floors throughout.
Some nice features, including V.C. Morris gift shop facade homage.

I have so many feelings about this building. It could have been great. Is it trying to hard? Are there too many elements, like the arches noted above? The architects are top notch. Maybe the client had too much input?

Yeah sure seems like the client brought a large wish-list.

Kundig has been pretty vocal in his dislike of "fish bowl" modernism. I can't recall reading or hearing an interview where he mentioned Wright specifically, but I suppose even taking this commission suggests he's not very hostile to Wright..?

I kinda like the scale of the arches. For such a flashy gesture, they seem rather mild and fun. Also pretty impressive that Kundig got 8000+ sq feet under a single roof form.

I think the outdoor "nook" with the fireplace, seating area, hot tub, and grill––with an off-axis, partially-revealed view of the lake––is the most charming area.
