Birth of the Prairie Style?... at Winslow?
Catchy title, but....
I see Winslow as Wright’s first experience after leaving Adler & Sullivan with a wealthy client who gave him some latitude to explore his talents. While the Winslow front facade and basic form are unusually elemental for their time, the interior’s overall organization is formal to the extreme, not Prairie. The entry hall reads as a tableau or shrine of the “hearth and home” rendered in “what would Sullivan do”, rather than a space to be lived in or comfortably occupied for any length of time. The stair tower at the rear of the house and the stables in the rear yard are where Wright seems to find himself, at least to my eye.
None of this is to say the house is not an important work of American architecture, but it isn’t Prairie.

Manson praised the street facade and thought the rear a jumbled mess. The rear is the only place we see Wright emerge at all on the house; Manson saved himself by giving credit to the stable.
