Wright designed and had made tall-back dining chairs with square or rectangular-section spindles over at least a twenty-year period. The chairs in his Oak Park dining room, which Diane Maddex dates to 1889, have spindles only down to the seat; over time these spindles would regularly extend below the seat, culminating in the 1909 chairs for the Robie house, where they descend nearly to the floor.
