Thanks for the informative and well-illustrated piece on McDonald---a public service for those interested in this architect !

A 1-bedroom apartment in my 93-year-old building went on the first day it was offered - ONLINE SIGHT UNSEEN! - for twice the price of this house!
This house seems rather "un-McDonald-like."

There are some surprises, starting with the masses of brick facing the street, and the pierced block (would that have been an available pattern, at the time ?). But I think there's some evidence of spatial play related to the customary floor-level changes that mostly eludes this set of photographs.

True, not enough photos to give an accurate understanding of the house. But the mass of it seems out of character, also.

The pair of photos of the fireplace, from opposite sides, illustrates the split level. The brick choice is perhaps a bit unfortunate: lifeless in color and texture, and the asymmetrical running bond is no help.

My guess is the photos and images do not do it justice.
.The brick color wouldn't be my first choice. I could grow to like it.
* On the outside, freshening up the facade and landscaping would deemphasize the brick mass (front of the house).
* On the interior, the floors feel oppressive. Is it terrazzo or epoxy? More appropriate (warmer) floors or floor colors would deemphasize the interior brick.
This was JR McDonald house in Racine that was thoughtfully modernized:

Tasty ! A lot was done to the interior of that house, all of it seeming to support rather than detract from the architect's intent ?
I like the landscaping, too. Thanks for the look.

I don't dine on my knees!
I dislike the current fad in bathroom design, and the tiled wall in kitchen strikes the wrong tone with the stone.
Other than that, very good.

The price is certainly right, compared to the New York, Chicago, San Francisco or Los Angeles suburbs, where it would be listed at somewhere between three and ten times as much, I expect.
