FLLW Willard Keland House for sale in Wisconsin? Zillow ad says it's a very large Usonian, but aside from a lot of weird updating, it just seems totally out of proportion and far too lavish for a Usonian, but that's just me -

the Keland House was enlarged by John Howe as their family grew, however its much more than a Usonian. Being Herb Johnson's daughter provided Wright with an opportunity to design something very special. Keep in mind realtor's photographs are always deceiving.

Like
Jones' Edmonson House, Keland House seems to be another case of '
how can they be asking so little, for so much'? A ~5,000 sq ft. Wright house for only $725K???

Seventeen drawings; three irrelevant photos:

The drawings can be expanded for viewing; use the four-arrow icon at upper left of each page.
As usual, we have only to insert the name of a client in the query box, after "Wright," to see what's up on Artstor. These are assumed to be the majority if not the totality of drawings originally found in the Taliesin archives and now in the possession of the Avery Library at Columbia University in New York City.
In addition, it is possible to search here at Wright Chat for a client name.

A link to an online image of the rendering for the 1961 addition to the house designed by John H Howe:
https://umedia.lib.umn.edu/item/p16022coll104:28
The working drawings for the addition are listed as being with the Howe archive in Minnesota. I’m not sure if these are copies or originals. Howe was with TAA in 1961, and the file should presumably be with the TAA materials at the Avery in some form.

Thanks for that link, Dan. Boy, Jack could draw ! The most colorful plan drawings I've ever seen. I love all the red and green.
There are subtle differences between the various drawings. I like the ones where the outlines of forms are blue. He might have made blue-line prints of a base drawing, and colored them . . .?

H.F. Johnson Jr. (known as H.F. or Hib, not Herb), wrote to Wright and asked who at Taliesin could design a home for Karen, who Wright was very fond of. Wright wondered why Karen shouldn't have "the real thing." Karen told me that he accepted two unusual conditions to get the commission: he agreed to be under the supervision of John Halama, the SCJ company architect, and because the radiant floor heating did not work well at Wingspread where Karen grew up, a firm from Indiana would handle that aspect of the work. My favorite story that Karen told me twice was that Wright sent works that he was dying and wanted H.F. and Karen to visit. (My regret is not getting the timeframe when this happened). They got to Taliesin, and Wright was laid out in the living room surrounded by somber apprentices. "Bring the girl (as he called Karen) to me." She was petrified as she was led to the dying Wright. He let it be known that if H.F. would pull out his checkbook he would be cured. H.F. complied and Wright lived happily ever after, at least until April 1959!

Thank you, David. I struggle to understand which portions of the house are Howe additions. Storrer mentions playroom, greenhouse, and patio fountain, and says the central courtyard is Howe's creation, resulting from those additions. In the excellent AD aerial photo, the playroom is the diagonal volume in the foreground---but where is the greenhouse ? Storrer's plan shows the former, but not the latter ? Is the greenhouse the element at left in the photograph ?

Howe's revisions were extensive - rearrangement of nearly all of the bedrooms and baths, the addition of Nikki's room to the end of the bedroom wing (off of the playroom), conversion of garage to another bedroom, and the construction of the new garage with conservatory to the north. You really have to compare both plans to get the complete picture.

Has a plan of the house as it appears today been published ? In looking for one here, I found this not-very-old thread. Why my images are not appearing is a mystery. They will open in a new tab or window, as before.
