Something virtually never seen is the gridded or "grated" dining tabletop. I've been contemplating the thing for almost thirty years. 1 1/4" or even 1 1/2" square openings present no problems for the use of any glassware on the surface---regardless of the dimension of the solid material separating the openings. The squeamish, or those unwilling to keep such a top clean, could cover it with glass, or the cells could be filled with clear resin. Transparent or opaque "placemats" are another option.
None of these interventions or compromises is strictly necessary, however . . .

I took note of that table, too. I think such a design would also work well for bookshelves.

Certainly--though perhaps for vertical surfaces, as pierced shelves might not be so visible ?
My early designs were for metal grating, where there is a lot more transparency because the solids are so thin. There must be aluminum square-grid grating; I found fiberglas, which is also light and strong---but the sample I have has non-slip grit applied to one surface. Not cool.
Here's a sketch from April 17, 1998. The main top "planks" are 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" metal grating, the outrigger boards and supporting framing are wood, the piers concrete or a substitute, the lantern shades copper or galvanized steel, and the raised central server is glass. Proportions and dimensions TBD; this is a concept sketch.
