NEW BOOK

Post by Tom »

Soviet Architectural Avante Gardes
Bloomsbury Press.

According to the description I read, this book was painstakingly researched with the thesis that modern architecture under Stalin was not as completely shut down as the usual narrative conveys.
According to the reviewer:

"... a fascinating final chapter, also reveals for the first time the details of Frank Lloyd Wright's triumphant welcome at the First Congress of Soviet Architects in Moscow in 1937, at the height of Stalin's Terror."

When you travel the Soviet Union, you see a surprising amount of very interesting contemporary 20th century architecture. Likewise, they were also producing cutting edge modern painting and sculpture, today mostly in private collections there and here, as well as in European museums. As in the Soviet Union, we in the west don't always get the whole story.
