Such as sad little mess at this point. The Clarke house won a Mention, Class II from Progressive Architecture magazine on June, 1949. May shared this honor for residential design with Richard Neutra for his Case Study House #20 and Paul Rudolph / Ralph Twitchell for their Miller Residence in Sarasota, Florida among others.

The structure was a black type of concrete, the floors a golden color, also concrete, with birch built-ins and tectum ceiling. Beautiful textures and colors. The carport was later enclosed and a new garage stuck on the front like a carbuncle. If you look at the color photos of the near-by Ford house (completed the next year) you can get a better sense of the materials. The Ford was demolished for the land value and I fear this one will follow.

From the start of the FLWBC, I advocated for a broader, more inclusive effort, taking in FLW-related architects whose work may not receive as much attention, but was similarly in danger of being wiped out. One fine, if only FLW-adjacent, architect whose excellent work has all but been lost is Gordon Drake (1917-1952). He may have fared better if he had been more visible. But the majority of the founding members thought the FLW plate was full enough.

Oy. Thanks, Craig. Well, the restorer (we hope there will be one) has his model, in the first photo and one hopes in a number of other drawings and photos . . .?
