SDR, would you take a look at the large section posted above.
I'm thinking that the large "Stanchion" is constructed similar to the truss above the living room at Staley: sandwich construction: inner frame is dashed lines and these are "trussed" by what the drawings call out as "plywood cheeks"

Yes---it appears that 2 x 12s are arranged as a bracket, than partially sandwiched between plywood "cheeks," in a way comparable to the construction of some furniture pieces at Fallingwater. A hollow or cavity is created, and the material is stepped attractively as an exterior expression.
