Size of Windows?

Post by Matt2 »

Did Wright ever design a wall of glass, as so many mid-century architects did? It seems his use of glass was in smaller panes, as part of a larger grid of frames. I can't think of a residence with floor to ceiling glass, though it was available in the late 40s and 50s. I wonder if that was simply a reflection of learning his trade in the 19th century when glass could only be so big.

Of course he kept up with availability of materials in new sizes, etc. I don't know what size the largest pieces of glass he specified were, or where they were installed. It's true that while he repeatedly had glass disappear into ceiling plaster in the later period, he seems not to have liked glass at floor level. He left that detail to followers like Olof Dahlstrom:

Gillin sash sheet; I think I see dimensions of 5'-4" x 9'-8" . . .

. . . but maybe that's only 7'-4" . . .

Check the photos in Storrer.
I have been in the house. They are full-height sliding glass doors and fixed.

That Gillen may be the large sheets I've seen in a Wright design. Patio doors with fields of glass are common in his work, as are grids of glass. I recall a substantial wall of glass in the Guggenheim, but rarely in a residence.

I wonder if any Wright house has large areas of butted glass, joined with silicone---other than the signature corner glass ?

Rayward, maybe ? Here's Laurie Virr's take on the concept:

I would be surprised if any FLW window consisted of butted glass with silicone beyond a corner window.
