Re: Alsop house news
wondering where the 9 inch floor thickness comment came from - the building section shows 3-1/2 inch concrete slab with 5-1/2 crushed gravel below.
Re: Alsop house floor mat
The late owner mentioned the thickness of the slab to me about five years ago, not sure why he thought that.
Re: Alsop house news
My guess is that Gordon was mistaken. Was he maybe including the gravel below?
Re: Alsop house news
I thought maybe I had seen one section noting a thick perimeter footing, perhaps of that dimension. But I don't see it now.
Well, it will be wonderful to see someone take this on. Two superb Wright restorations in one small town---what's not to like ?

Re: Alsop house news
When the original copper-pipe heating system at Sol Friedman failed, the owner didn't demolish the slab to repair it, but instead installed a new system of radiators, artfully disguised in cases designed to blend with the architecture.

Re: Alsop house news
I seem to remember, from years ago, that the slab was cracked when a previous owner turned off the radiant heating system and went away for the winter so the pipes froze. Not sure this is accurate information, though. And apparently the house has a forced air system now?????
Re: Alsop house news
On the previous page I linked us to a 2008 thread on the house, wherein Lamberson owner and Alsop neighbor Peter M related the story of the damage to the slab.

I'm a sucker for a good hard-edge painting and noticed one over the fireplace of the Alsop House.

Anyone know who the artist is?

Re: Alsop house news
Gordon told me it was a Chicago painter, but nothing more. I’m not sure if it’s signed.
Re: Alsop house news
Wow---luscious photographs. Note propped carport cantilever.

Interesting that Alsop was a clothes retailer. So were Meyer May, Charles Ennis and (among other products) Edgar Kaufman.

Re: Alsop house news
I have a question about those white frames of the doors and windows. Are those original or it has been painted for some owner..?

Those white window frames are Pella windows that replaced the original.

David- You beat me to it! I was just going to post this. The video was shot and edited last week (June 8th, Wright’s birthday!) by Des Moines photographer, Dan Welk.
