Happy New Year, music-lovers ! Have I not, before this, introduced Wright Chat readers to a treat on YouTube, namely a scrolling representation of the manuscript for many of Bach's works, paired with very fine performances of these (instrumental) pieces ?

Without further ado, I give you gerubach !

That is interesting; it doesn't do that for me. The ins and outs of the InterWebs continue to confound and wrankle. (Say that twice . . .!)

Let me know if that changes for you, or if you find an explanation. Others ? Anyone else have this experience ? David's problem can't be unique---can it ?

On the subject: if you have a favorite bit of Bach, try Googling its name followed by Gerubach, and see if it's one he's given the scrolling treatment to. It can be instructive, or at least amusing, to see the composer's notes and measures march by the eyes, as the music caresses the ears . . .

Thanks, Reidy---well done. The flaw is a mystery, to me.

In addition to whatever mastery of his graphic medium Gerubach has achieved, as demonstrated by these videos, his ear for good performance excels as well ?

My ideal of the realization of a score, like that of an architectural design, is "transparency"---a faithful if also spirited performance, sans whim or peccadillo, no unasked-for embellishment, modest but sound and without visible (or audible) flaw, and thus revelatory. A clear reflection of the artist's aim, in other words.

Yes, I do listen to music other than Bach. At the moment, a truly all-in performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Manzoni Requiem:

This, to clear the musical memory bank from last week's passion, the Concert in G of Maurice Ravel:

Pure joy. How sad that so many are scared off of "serious" music at an early age, never to find the gems that will speak to them from times past.

Next ? Maybe two other favorites, the first piano concerto of Sergei Prokofiev or the Concerto for Organ, Strings and Tympani of Francis Poulenc. Or some Chopin ? Find your own favorite recordings, on YouTube or elsewhere . . .
