BBP Memorial

Post by m.perrino »

Today was a day of sadness and also celebration at T-W, with Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer's Memorial Service. Great honors from people like the author Kathryn Smith, a tearful remembrance from Indira Berndston, Vern Swabeck who talked about the archive work done by Jack Howe and David Wheatley (sp?) in the years just after WW2. A moving slide show, as well. Moving forward, at least at T-W, it was announced that Bruce's house will be called the "BBP House". All things must pass.

Thanks for the report.

I wish I had heard Vern Swaback. Is it too soon -- or too late -- to ask whether his remarks were recorded for posterity ?

Or perhaps his reminiscences are available elsewhere . . .

Was Bruce ever referred to by his initials, as a sort of nickname, in his presence (or not) ?

The event was filmed - video and my entire time at T-W, I've never heard Bruce referred to as anything other than Bruce or Bruce Pfeiffer. Introductions always included his middle name.

I recall the first time I met Bruce. He was as nervous as a cat on ice. He had no public persona at all, and was very reluctant to appear before an audience. The next time we met, he was composed and in total control. He seemed to have buckled down to learn how to deal with public speaking.

During the reception, following the Memorial Service for Bruce, I happened to sit across from Dr. Maxine Fawcett-Yeske, co-editor with Bruce of The Life of Olgivanna Lloyd Wright.

She revealed, among other things, that she is currently working on a biography of Mrs. Wright ... and that she has already interviewed members of Mrs. Wright's family in Montenegro.

I kept looking for an obit in the New York Times. I thought he deserved one.
