Sikkens Stain Colors

Post by pharding »

We are looking at exterior stain options on Cypress siding for a Usonian FLW House. One approach is to us Sikkens Cetol 1 and Cetol 23. What colors have people been using? The existing siding has been stripped of a solid stain and the wood is is fine condition.

Isn't colorless the ideal option, preservationally as well as aesthetically ? Or does that miss a more subtle possibility ? A mild stain can bring together disparate mismatched boards . . .

We have seen photos of the freshly-stripped Jacobs I, and a subsequent application of something quite amber. A water-clear coat (or something close) might have left the siding lighter and less colorful, and possibly more raw looking ?

At Sweeton, we used Sikkens Cetol ProLuxe SRD RE Translucent Matte Wood Finish (color "Teak" 085) on the cypress vertical and horizontal mullions, and the Douglas Fir replacement vertical mullions. It is a one part application. This was the closest match to the color of a portion of sun and weather shielded material. The original finish applied was shellac later covered by spar varnish. The teak color Sikkens matched the color of the shellac'd only wood and also served to blend the more uniform grain Doug Fir with the louder cypress graining.
