I recall an article about the earlier, sensitive expansion in, I believe, Fine Homebuilding. The changes were extensive, but carefully thought out. Like Taliesin in its ever-varying evolution, the first expansion of Breuer did no damage to the original design.

Tirranna

Post by SpringGreen »

Here's Pedro Guerrero's discussion of meeting Wright for lunch at Tirranna in Connecticut in Picturing Wright
Early in the spring of 1958 I received a phone call from Mr. Wright. He announced that he was in New Canaan, Connecticut, visiting Joyce and John Rayward, for whom he had designed a house [the house being Tirranna], and he invited me to meet him there for lunch. I joined the group as they were finishing and was pleased to see Mr. Wright looking so well. We talked, drank coffee, and were strolling around the grounds when Mr. Wright suddenly declared that he would like to pay a visit to his old friend Philip Johnson... who also lived in New Canaan. Besides, he had never seen Johnson's widely publicized Glass House.
Picturing Wright, p. 101.
Then from there Guerrero gave the story about listening to Wright and Johnson talk about the history of architecture in the presence of Alfred Barr. It's an amusing story which I'd transcribe but I don't have time to type (plus I'm pretty sure most of the people reading this have this book, & maybe others by Guerrero).
"The building as architecture is born out of the heart of man, permanent consort to the ground, comrade to the trees, true reflection of man in the realm of his own spirit." FLLW, "Two Lectures in Architecture: in the Realm of Ideas".

The house has been on the market for a while, hasn't it. These large photos show areas not previously revealed ? What a palace this house became . . . even allowing for the magic of "photographic enlargement" !

One has to admit that $6M is a steal by today's standards.
