Balch House 1906-1911

Post by Tom »

Didn't know about this house until David's Net Zero Video.
Looks like original idea was all flat roof.
Second floor bedroom plan is packed.

Balch is odd. The house is rigidly symmetrical. The arrangement of the 6 bedrooms upstairs is awkward, especially the two tiny ones tucked in between the others. To get to the front door, one must walk up the driveway to the back side. The ceiling trim, in plan, looks heavy-handed. Yet, in reality, it is a thoroughly delightful house. The addition of a carefully integrated family room at the back has helped connect the house to the private side. I can well imagine that living in this house must be very comfortable.
