The view shed protections would have needed to be introduced 30 or more years ago when the move toward 6-10 story development began in the neighborhood. Only a sliver of Mendota is visible from Lamp’s roof when leaves are off trees at this point.

Importance should be placed on ensuring the house can be seen and that it remains desirable for a real use, either in its current location, or somewhere else. Possibly a move to the corner of its current block might be most achievable.

Its always a slippery slope when one so cavalierly suggests "move it". Yes, its saved. But, IMHO, at a significant loss, as Wright's building's were mostly so site specific. The Lamp house was no exception. It's specific location on the property along with its accessible roof top were essential elements that FLlW incorporated so that his friend and client Robbie Lamp could enjoy a view of the lake. It was extremely important to Lamp and an integral part of Wright's design. The complexities of its current context and situation are well above my pay grade but, with all due respect, lets not jump onto the "move it" band wagon so quickly.

The thought of moving a brick building gives me the willies---but I guess they do it. There can be little doubt that this house has lost its original views of the lake, forever, in its original location.

When Elsner bought the Bogk House, they looked into moving it to a more desirable location. There were movers who would have done the job, but in the end, they decided to leave it where it was. Lamp is tiny by comparison. If the lots to the SW are still vacant, it would be easy to move the house, and the owner/developer would get the tax write-off for relocating a protected property, as well as more land to develop. Since the views from the roof are no longer possible, that aspect of the house seems like just a bit of history. Moving may be the only logical solution.

Seems like a win-win if political and financial wills align. The house was effectively lost decades ago and would find a new future if saved by the move. Hard to see how staying would work.

I suppose zoning ordinances are the public's only defense against unbridled commercial and/or private development of the ground we all share. The profit motive behind many private and most commercial projects must be the culprit, one assumes.

Here in the Bay Area (with apologies to Boston) sports franchises have changed the landscape along the waterfront and threaten to do so again: the Oakland A's got tired of their old inland facility (designed by Ed Bassett of SOM) and have just received permission to build a new one---smack in the middle of Oakland's major waterfront shipping port. Unbelievable. I have to assume that someone who stands to profit handsomely from this development has been pushing hard for this to happen . . . the public good be damned. The standard operating procedure in these cases is that the municipality is (eventually) persuaded that an expanded tax base will be worth the interruption of other commerce---while in fact footing a large part of the bill, in the form of tax rebates, etc, to make it happen. Private socialism, public capitalism ?

Nothing new about money forcing common sense senseless. In 1958, the City of Los Angeles scotched a plan to build affordable housing in Elysian Park, and sold the land (which had been acquired by eminent domain) to the Dodgers Baseball Team, uprooting an entire community of low-income people in the process. Even more appalling is the Supreme Court ruling Kelo v City of New London, February 2005, which allowed the city to use eminent domain to confiscate a stable neighborhood that wasn't paying enough in property tax, to sell to a private developer for a shopping center. The home owners - mostly elderly - were forced out, the neighborhood demolished, and the developer backed out of the deal. To date, the land stands empty, and New London coffers have only suffered as a result.

I remember the New London (Conn.) case---but I never learned of the outcome. Boo . . .
