... regal in front of the wood pieces). I like the idea that these new pieces you're commissioning could be next generation companions of the Beharka ones. Are you authoring their design or leaving it up to the maker? If the latter, I'd at least show him the Beharka pieces so he can relate ...

Kevin, I couldn't get your link to the Flickr page to work (got a "page not found" message). I'd really like to see your Beharka-does-walnut images, if that's what it was. I like the story about the pending works from your black walnut tree. Wanna see photos of the results. I ...

... Beautiful stuff. I too have been getting into the wood thing. In addition to the Beharka turned black walnut bowls and vases, a local craftsman made this live edge bowl from local walnut. I have a huge, dead for many years black ...

... to these wood-trimmed stucco houses. Yours is a special take on the foursquare type -- in miniature -- would you say ? One thinks of Kevin's Bob Beharka residence, from the Usonian period, as a volumetric companion . . . Is the Ross house similar in size to the Fireproof House ? According to ...

... quality work, I would put John Lautner and E. Fay Jones at the top of the list. They were true innovators. Others: Aaron Green, John Howe, Bob Beharka, and though maybe technically not an apprentice, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr. Earlier apprentices Rudolf Schindler and Richard Neutra would be up ...

To SDR's list, I would add Bob Beharka, Milton Stricker and William Bernoudy. Bob's work is stripped to the bare essentials, absolutely nothing extraneous, closer to a Japanese aesthetic than any of the other apprentices. Milt's abstractions ...

Sumac grows wild all over the Midwest. Its autumnal crimson color is spectacular. All landscaping in America should be native. It suits our character. The national flower should not be the American Beauty Rose, but the Black-Eyed Susan or Jack-in-the-Pulpit.

Beharka House is looking good.

Beharka house - Progress

It has been quite a while since I've posted any recent photos of the house. Exterior wood restoration started at the carport and the back of the house, but El Nino and cool temps forced us to focus on other things for several months. Landscaping continues. The Japanese theme wasn't working, so I hav...

Yes. It was during a stroll by Bob Beharka's textile block shelter that Wright decided Bob was the apprentice to supervise Llewellen Wright's house. Bob built his shelter in 1956. he didn't get to spend much time there, as he left to supervise the construction of Wright, Marden and Fawcett.

Sikkens 23 and high gloss

Several who have tackled exterior wood restoration and preservation have specified Sikkens Cetol 1 and Cetol 23. We are soon to be working on the Beharka house exterior wood and I've been trying different products. While I was excited about trying the 3 step Sikkens product, I was very surprised ...
