Points well taken, SDR. I agree that the architect has added some nice signature features throughout the home. The stained glass design on the door leading to the upstairs studio is also a nice touch. It seems that a great deal of redwood was used throughout the home. Are those cedar or redwood shak...

Below is the link to the real estate listing for the Dahlstrand house in Carmel which was sold after only a couple of months on the market. The link contains some very nice interior and exterior photographs along with a floorplan.

A wonderful residence, and I'm saddened that learn that it is being fundamentally dismantled. It seems slated to the same fate as neighboring Wild Bird. Is Mr. Dahlstrand still living?

Cordially,

Matt

It is indeed hard to say whether it would be best to hope for a faithful restoration/re-creation of the original structure using the existing "bones" or to essentially start over from scratch. There are certainly pros and cons to both approaches. Hopefully the breathtaking site will one se...

To paraphrase my grandfather, I think that Wild Bird from Mills'/Owings' time has flown the coop.

Macrodex, the precursor project is interesting.....and a bit less vertical in concept than Rentz/Gordon. SDR, it seems that Whitford Haddock was based primarily upon the Petersen version of the design. Is that your understanding? I wonder if the documents for the Legacy Projects were sent to Columbi...

The drawings are interesting in concept and would definitely make for lots of 'vertical' living and movement. I agree with Roderick that the design has the 'work in progress' feel. Macrodex, was your post of the Petersen perspective and floor plan on page one of the thread taken from the FLLW Comple...

Thanks for your insightful comments, SDR. The simultaneous use of the module/ grid for both decoration and informing the direction of the design reminds me once again of Wright's brilliant attention to scale and harmony.

SDR, thanks for the detailed information. As someone with very little, if any technical background, what are some reasons for the use of differing module sizes.....scale, layout, variety, square footage, structural issues, etc.? Although I may be totally wrong, the 2 x 4 module would seem more diffi...

Great quote, Roderick! I recall that Mr. and Mrs. Shavin tried to get a construction-related question answered by Jack Howe, and Wright sent them a reply which stated that they needed to go directly through the front door instead of through the back door. On another note, is the module for Whitford ...

Well said, SDR and peterm. Thanks for posting the 'Below Zero' design. It seems to show the very close involvement of Mr. Wright.

I agree that the iterations of this design are delightful and are very forward-thinking, especially considering that the initial design emerged in the late 1930s/early 1940s before the Usonian concept was fully realized. I recently reviewed the Zero house in the Monographs at the library, and it see...

Whiteford Haddock House - Ann Arbor

As a follow-up to a post by SDR from last fall regarding the Whitford Haddock House in Ann Arbor (which is noted by Mark Hertzberg in his Wright in Racine book), I came across some photos earlier today which I'll post momentarily. EP Mark Hertzberg has it covered in his Wright in Racine . Google is ...
