Since Eichler hired architects, wouldn't that put his houses in the 2% column?

But yes I agree the Eichler approach was great and there should be more like him.... How do we create more Eichlers?

I hope you guys can see that my suggestions are half-baked on purpose... I disagree with the author's conclusion that the reason why only 2% of newly built houses use an architect is because the collective Architect hasn't offered worthwhile designs. "Unless we satisfy the hunger for better pla...

This sounds like an argument in favor of the already existing Design/Build model that some architects have been doing for quite some time. Architects who have "partnered" with specific builders over many projects is not new. FLW did it with several builders who were not scared of his desi...

Seems like a decades-old complaint: Architects are doing a poor job of supplying the market with valuable solutions for the affordable housing issue. While I agree with the author in sentiment (and appreciate his analogy to the American food system), I feel like his "call-to-action" was no...

I didn't find anything else written about this claim, except for a blog post from Dave Weinstein (he was also interviewed in the film). He doubts that Eichler offered Wright the job, due to finances: http://www.eichlernetwork.com/blog/dave-weinstein/%E2%80%98welcome-my-eichler%E2%80%99-film-goes-liv...

Surely Wright's preference was for Usonia/Broadacre vision, but wasn't he also making attempts at mass-scale housing in the post-war boom? Erdman prefabs and to some extent Usonian Automatics....? In a totally hypothetical thought exercise, I wonder if the constraints of the tract-housing model woul...

Did Wright "Rebuff" Eichler?

Watched this little film last night: https://vimeo.com/214796275 Starting at the 26:00 mark, the discussion turns to Eichler's time spent at the Bazett house. A couple minutes later, Daniel Liebermann claims that Eichler originally went to Wright to design the homes. He says that Wright rebuffed Eic...

Including the garage and the red-tinted concrete on the patio, I count 7 different floor surfaces.

Seems to me like the experience of an "economical warehouse" could be fairly satisfying if they just let it be exactly what it is... Betsky's points about bright fluorescent lights, oversized scale, and slick surfaces are the obvious offenders, but he misses the obnoxious typography and ov...

Who is Kelly Davis?
The book "Not So Big House" features an 800SF house/retreat he built for himself which seems very Usonian and very wonderful.

Rather than judging this group of designs for what they aren't, perhaps the progressive option would be to appraise them for what they are. You might be right about this, but boy is it hard to do. For me at least. I notice that the "Silverton" plan is enlargedGordon was 2100 SF wh...

5 designs closely based on existing Usonians, and 2 new designs... Does anyone have thoughts/critiques on the newer designs? The selection of Gordon, Bachman-Wilson, and Penfield makes me wonder what the criteria was for choosing models to base from...? Seems like there's a commonality between those...

In no way was I suggesting that "lectures" would help matters. I just figured having Pilloton explain her own ideas via video would be better than me describing them.... (Did you even watch her TED talk?) Pilloton put her ideas into action, by moving to rural NC and teaching high school ki...
