Shavin drive by

Passing thru Chattanooga today I decided to do a non-trespassing drive-by of the Shavin House.

Down by the road is a curious fragment of what I suspect was a more elaborate mailbox design.

From the street the house looks like a jewel.

David C,
Thanks for re-posting the link to those photos taken back in 2007.
It is rather surreal to look at photos of other people's furniture in your own house. I'm glad you enjoyed that tour. If you find yourself in Atlanta again come by again for another one.

SDR, Those FLW houses with names are at a whole other level (the cream of the crop). My house having a name like that is embarassingly "wannabe" in comparison. But, the entertaining part for me is that I am not sure whether Green's choice of "Sequoyah" is a misspelled attempt at ...

Well, thank you for the compliment, but I'm not a photographer. Funny thing is, I took almost all of those photos with my iPhone. (Isn't it something what their technology can do?) I am an architect, though, who has designed houses and been on many an architectural photo shoot where I've seen the pr...

Tom, I remember seeing that thread. You must be the one who has climbed the big, old wooden train trestle. My hat's off to that feat of bravery. When the leaves are off the trees I can see the trestle, which is a throwback to olden days.

Tom, yes it is. Interestingly, that park is there because it's the site of the opening battle in the Civil War's battle for Atlanta. I've thought about getting a metal detector to see if I can find anything buried in the yard. Nowadays we're in sight of the skyscrapers, though, so that battlefield v...

FLW Apprentice R Green Usonian-esque in Atlanta

I live in a house designed by FLW apprentice Robert Green (been here about two years). It's an interesting house because it was Green's first independent work, which he designed within months of Wright's death. His written account explains he was devoted to Mr. Wright, but to Mrs. Wright ... not so ...

Regarding Robert Green, I've seen his old website before but I can't seem to locate it in a search today. It may have passed on into the ether. I read on an old Wrightchat thread that one of the Wright chatters had hosted some of that content on a website with which he was involved, but looking at i...

I believe the volume I'm getting is a hard cover. Here's its checkered story, so far: I had never used ebay before, but after reading on Wrightchat about the monographs I decided to take the ebay maiden voyage when I found volume #6 for sale. I bought it on the spot. A few weeks later I received an ...

I think I see your two books peeking thru the grill. Safely ensconced, but close by for ready access. I zeroed in on book #6 for myself since it contains the golden stretch of Usonians that I find most interesting. I live in the first house designed by FLW apprentice Robert Green (commissioned withi...

You have so many little "gems" on display, it's hard to see them all in that mysterious light, which makes them all the more intriguing. I scanned your bookshelves trying to spot a set of the FLW Monographs (ADA Edita), but did not find them. (Those are on my mind since I'm new to it and h...

Wow. There's a lot to like in that room. Lots of calories for the eye. Those small models of chairs are terrific.

I don't know why, but suddenly (after 40 years of being a devoted student of Wright's drawings and buildings) this trivia question has suddenly become interesting to me. Looking at yet one more photo of FLW wearing a pork pie hat, I suddenly wondered "What happened to all those hats?" Sure...

FLW's personal effects

I saw an article today showing one of Wright's automobiles in its current restored state, photographs of which I've seen before. It got me wondering about his other possessions such as his drafting tools, cane, pork pie hats, and other personal effects. I would think it would be a moving experience ...
