There's a Lustron house around the corner from where I live - a funky pale "surf blue" & "maize yellow" one. Apparently, it belonged to the man who was the local Lustron distributor, who remained in the house until the 1990's. Reportedly, there were 10 in the city, but I've o...

So, from this building we (or at least, I) learn a name I haven't previously known -- the architect Oliver Hill. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Hill Even though his "Marylands" has the romantic Spanish/Scottish overtones, I see Oliver Hill was quite the streamline Moderne architect i...

Roderick, coincidentally I watched “Murder, She Said on Turner Classic Movies last night. The host Ben Mankiewicz told that story about Agatha Christie originally not favoring Rutherford’s casting. But he went on to say that Christie was pleasantly surprised by Rutherford’...

That Poirot series is a treasure trove of great architectural settings, one right after another. A few years ago, my daughter & I enjoyed together watching reruns of that 1980's era series on DVDs I'd inherited from my father. Only then did I realize that the Deco streamline moderne building (Fl...

Here's a poignant photo with mourners beside the coffin before lowering it into the grave.
Wesley Peters looks on.
Seeing him there, I can't help but think about his return in 1985 to undo that grave.

Thanks SpringGreen for clarifying the timeline. I just looked at Monograph #11 and see where Pfeiffer also explained it: https://i.imgur.com/cNZD9Py.jpg In Monograph #11, the text above describes the two rooms functioning as "drawing storage and exhibition space". Additionally, there are a...

The AT TALIESIN article announced the naming of the Dana and Roberts Rooms in their article dated July 12, 1934. According to Wikipedia, Roberts had died just a few months earlier in March 1934. Perhaps Wright was touched by his passing, and that immediate timing factored into the naming (?). Also, ...

Charles E Roberts gets a room

Two years ago the C E Roberts house (designed by Daniel Burnham then remodeled by FLW in 1896) was part of Oak Park's Wright Walk tours. I went thru it, and it didn't make much of an impression. I'm only just now connecting the dots ... where I'd seen that name before. When I had toured Hillside at ...

By the way, funky fireplaces like these are tricky at Christmas.
My 3 kids are adults now, but my wife is still compelled to hang their stockings by the chimney with care.

I've got some construction photos of the fireplace where I live (Copeland House by apprentice R Green). They show a steel lintel temporarily support by a screw jack while a mason works his way up the surrounding brick wall. There is a diagonal steel rod in place (but we can't see where it terminates...
