Sikkens is a great exterior stain, as it not only wears well, but protects the wood from the harmful effects of UV. I think the problem is that Wright never considered these homes to be the monuments that we do, and his concept of exterior finishes (linseed oil, cabots) did not stand up well over ti...

I certainly hope that whomever purchases the Goetsch-Winkler not only restores the trellis, but also strips off all of the icky solid-body exterior stain! I would hope that in the future owners would contact SOMEONE (FLWBC) before making this mistake...... this little house is one Wright's great wor...

The Jacobs I restoration included a detail at the fascia that essentially "floated" the redwood 2 inches in front of the turned down metal edge strip, so that water drained behind the redwood edge. Nylon spacer blocks spaced 4'-0" o.c. were used to support the redwood fascia and provi...

The original drawings for Fallingwater were lacking in a variety of ways, including how in the world Wright was planning on holding the thing up! It was there in concept, but still unresolved. Unfortunately, Wes and other structural engineers did their best to make it work without significantly alte...

not just the stone

From what I"ve seen of the photos, the house suffers from much more than disappointing details - the "space" of the living room, height of the window sills from the floor, the proportions of the room and fireplace design and location seem odd - to me its unresolved, not worked out. Pe...

My apologies if some take offense at my comments, but I attribute the construction of this home to a bit of self-indulgence, nostalgia, and a final tribute to a great architect. Its unfortunate that so many mistakes were made in the execution. Had it been done just a little better, it may have passe...

Exploring Progressive Design

I was wondering if anyone had attended the conference at TWest last weekend and had anything to report?

RJH - Its been a long time since I've read something as offensive and just plain stupid regarding the services of restoration architects. I believe that ignorance must be bliss in your case, as I am amazed that a person who believes so strongly in the preservation of buildings and architecture would...

I continue to be amazed at these definitive "opinions" about design in this chat room - the assertion that Louis Sullivan had little or nothing to do with the design of the Charnley House. James Charnley was a good friend of his - and most importantly, the overall massing of the house is s...

its deja vu all over again - from what I understand the Fallingwater people hired lawyers, and the battle began to look expensive, for copywright laws that were not altogether clear on the subject. However, I continue to be baffled at individuals who believe they have the right to reproduce Wright's...

I disagree - FLW actually designed some comfortable chairs - there were some failures, of course, but its inappropriate to condemn all of his designs. Keep in mind that furniture also includes tables, desks, settles, couches, lounge chairs, dining room and upright chairs. Many of his designs were ex...

FTA, now you have me thinking as well. I was under the impression that the Wright gate was never built, but the sequence of events may have been as you describe, wherein Mrs. Price commissioned a local architect to design a secure entry, w/brick piers, etc., incorporating the original FLW gate.........

FTA - The gates, brick piers and steel bars currently in place at the entry to the Price House were designed by a local architect, not by Wright. The original entry to the house was to be from a different street, and the Price's purportedly changed their minds about access, and never built the entry...

this has been a terrible two years for Adler & Sullivan Buildings. First the Charnley/Sullivan Cottages, Then Pilgrim Baptist and now the Wirt/Dexter Building. It's almost unbelievable...........In the most recent case the building was empty, which, of course, raises my suspicions as to the cause.
