This is my last take on this..... Mr. Harding, I don't know by what standards you judge architecture. Claiming that Holabird & Root, Graham, Anderson Probst & White, SOM, P&W did " an occasionally good building" is almost bizarre - these were great, great firms, that accomplish...

Let's not forget George Maher to Phillip Maher, Eliel Saarinen to Eero Saarinen (then to Roche/Dinkaloo), H.H. Richardson's firm (they're still working!), Daniel Burnham to Graham, Anderson, Probst & White. McKim, Mead and White existed for over 30 years after the death of White. so really, ther...

Now we condemn all firms that live beyond their founders? Let's see,

SOM (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill), Roche/Dinkeloo (Eero Saarinen), Holabird & Roche to Holabird and Root, Perkins & Will, DMJM. Its a fairly standard and acceptable process of passing on the legacy.

Don't forget the Bradley and Hickox Houses in Kankakee!

It seems that every FLW house was the first for something - and these ongoing claims really don't mean much after awhile.

Mr. Kottom, I wholeheartedly agree with your vision - the problem is there is NO ONE at the organization that shares that vision, or can even imagine it. There's a saying here - something about leading a horse to water...... IF the board were comprised of true thinkers, who had the where with all to...

Mr. Harding, I don't know exactly what you mean about the Federal Government being concerned, but be very, very careful about this topic, because the absolutely LAST thing the world needs is the Federal Government in charge of restoration and maintenance at Taliesin. The reason that TA and the Fello...

No JimM, you are entitled to your opinion, it just sounds so vicious....and I think history will bear out the significance of the work - of course there were some "dogs" - but there were some beauties too.

wow, so much preaching! Not a single architect of note?? William Wesley Peters did some nice things, so did Tom Casey, Charles Montooth, and many others. This TA bashing is disturbing, and I can't begin to understand how one justifies talking about a FIRM, i.e., a collective practice of architects (...

I have come to the conclusion that very little will be accomplished with the properties until the remaining members of the Fellowship "move on" in one form or another. My fear is that there has been very little planning of a transitiion to the next generation, a void of individuals to pick...

I'm glad that liebermeister spoke up, as a number of good points have been made, the most significant being the issue of "institutionalism" if the properties default to the state or feds. This issue alone warrants the preservation of the fellowship, or some similar entity. The problem is t...

Thank you for bringing this to the attention of everyone - this house is a great example of Drummond's work, and shows that there was more than one (sorry FLW) architect doing great works in Chicago at the turn of the century. I hope that the right person (no pun intended) comes along to buy it. Its...

OK, hold on here. I remember Wright saying something about the roof should NEVER be perfectly flat, to allow for water runoff. (The Natural House). I believe that even the flat roofs of the Usonians had a slight pitch...Dead flat roofs were advocated by some post-war architects, and suggestions were...

a slow form of demolition

Does anyone know how the following cabinet doors came to be listed at Tomey Gallery for auction this weekend? Last I heard, the house was still standing......... 315. Frank Lloyd Wright cabinet doors, pair, from the Hills-DeCaro house, c. 1906, incased in original frame, leaded design with wide cami...

thanks Mr. Harding, for explaining the origin of creosote stains. Mr. Cabot evidently did a great thing by perfecting the addition of creosote to an oil-based stain, and even managed to produce a variety of colors! I was only aware of roofers dipping shingles in the product, which I'm sure greatly i...

yes, but did wright specify the creosote stain on the Davenport House? Most of his works from that period (willits, bradley, henderson, hickox) were stained with an oil-based Cabots transparent stain, which tends to break down over time. Creosote was used primarily for roofing shingles. It may have ...
