Per page 83 of the aforementioned 1983 Preservation Press monograph, Howard C. Rickert, who built both the original house and the first rebuild, discussing the first rebuild, states "We built a new and longer trellis on the living room end, as it had been originally. It was damaged in Hurricane...

Feldman appears to be a very accurate construction, and is quite beautiful and comfortable especially now that the original FLlW furniture has been returned from the V & A. Differences from the published plan appear to be: (1) built plan is mirror image of the original(2) siting is perhaps 15º ...

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, $24,000 in 1950 is equivalent of $239,000 in 2016. If Sweeton is 1650 sq. ft, that would be under $150/sq. ft. which sounds pretty efficient to me.

Regarding the above mention of the structural ties across the courtyards, there are now unseemly tubular ties spanning some of the courtyards; Sorry I don't have an photos of them but I try not to look at them, much less photograph them, when I am there. Clearly an engineering "fix" by som...

When I purchased the '93 edition, it was missing some pages. I sent it back to the bookstore and they replaced it. I think you should send yours back...I have seen the new edition in bookstores and your binding problem is not normal.

I didn't notice today, but I have noticed in the past that the broken brick was previously replaced or repaired, as were the previously broken plastic lenses on the facade.

Went to see the pop-up in Morris today. Most plaster surfaces painted a deadly grey-white, with "accents" and "accent walls" a darker blue-grey. Carpet up the ramp and on the balcony large pieces of the correct greige carpeting laid in a strange diagonal pattern with tan carpetin...

That single photo definitely is the upper level of Morris. Since they said they painted the interior, etc., they had time to stage this photo. I worry about the etc.

Will check out next week.

I don't find the house strange at all. If you study the plan, it is really quite disciplined, and clever where it "blends the two unit systems" as Storrer opines. And unlike how it appears in these overly-zoomie photos, and with the over-accumulation of thirty-plus years of possessions, it...

The local Apple Genius installed AdwareMedic on my laptop after it got very corrupted about April 5. This is the newest version of MalwareBytes, which they installed about a year ago for a similar problem. Its a "please make a donation" software. I have no reason to believe it did or didn'...

I have gone in the building fairly regularly since 1968, since my office was just around the corner. The worst incarnation was when it was the Circle Gallery, not just because of their benign neglect of the building, but because the bad tourist art they featured was an insult to design. Could I ever...

Yes there were originally up lights in the pavement. They undoubtedly met the fate of many lights in the pavement: water leaks. There is currently colored concrete in that area. It's the old landscape design technique of turning the eye and the feet into the entrance.

And don't forget the Robie House was almost torn down when it was owned by the Chicago Theological Seminary and later by the University of Chicago. And its only in the last few years that Florida Southern University has begun to reverse the damage they did to their buildings for half a century. Univ...
