McCartney - gravel

On the cover sheet / site plan it is noted as gravel. Currently we have impacted 22a (gravel and clay) with a light topping of pea stone in the radius that leads into the carport. The private driveway was paved by second owner. Over the next few weeks the 22a will be scraped down approx. 12 inches, ...

DRN - support 100% - completed 2 non-wright homes starting in 1990, both are currently rented to great long term tenants (10 plus years). McCartney house is a 10 year restore with the first year in books with no regrets. Quality of space, light and simplicity!

I can relate. One december we had a $1,751 heating bill...one month...in California. The wind blew through the double doors as if they didn't exist. Ugh. The house was set at 60 degrees all winter....believe it or not with the Tulikivi burning 2 hours in the a.m., 2-3 hours in the p.m. we kept the ...

Carping about the heater is like attacking a restoration because the owner chose an "inappropriate" couch. Many of the Usonians are under-heated. Some respond with woolens; others amp up the system. For years Mossberg had a huge cast iron stove in its living room fireplace, which did not ...

It is not just the Usonians that had problems with under-heating. I one of the reasons that contributed to the demise of the Little House in MN was the inability to heat it properly in the winter with all of that glazing. Also I just finished reading the book on the Boynton House by Kim Bixler and ...

J. Meyers, I am very appreciative of your efforts to preserve and restore the McCartney house. DRN has provided some very sound guidance from his experiences with the Sweeton house. Roderick, the Hagans installed a stove in the Kentuck Knob fireplace in the 1970s, and I believe it was eventually re...

Take it with a bit of humor. But you can't install a big black box with a waist-high oven-like chamber and not expect some holocaust references. Having given the cheap shot, I do commend you on the labor of love of restoring a great home. Keep up the labor and the updates, please. Matt. O.K. accept...

I believe the preservation world calls this a "reversable" alteration - one would hope that over time the house will get buttoned up, insulated, etc. which will reduce the need to provide this level of heat. In the meantime, press on! Correct. Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilit...

block sizing

What I would like to know about McCartney is the construction of the perf blocks. It looks like the glass extends to the top edge of the block, so that there is no 'block' for about 10". Are the blocks 12"x16"? Block sizing is 12" x 16". Glass? specification reads PLASTIC I...

McCartney house circa 1951

It appears that phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3 were all poured secondary. There is a 1/2 discrepancy from block to floor of 1/2" so 11 1/2" is dimension of finished floor to top of first block. There is evidence of a early schluter strips against certain areas of block. Phase 1 did have accu...

Mc Cartney - based on equilateral triangle

Home for Mr. & Mrs Ward Mc Cartney - 1950 is based on an equilateral triangle. Very acute 30 degree angle laid on the east - west grid. The westerly wardrobe room is 30 degrees. We are the new owners. The house will be included in the 2013 Annual Conference. We have occupied space for 11 months....
