Fay Jones was able to design houses that exuded domesticity at any scale…small or very large.
The mezzanine of this house with its clerestories, gable end glazing, and layered roof planes is sheltered but not confined and visually stimulating.

Re: Goetsch-Winckler Usonian house
First and foremost, welcome blase! All the chairs in the home had a thin layer of dust and the undersides were filled with cobwebs. I'm trying to decide whether or not to remove the aftermarker felt sliders. My wife and I own, and have gradually restored over the last 15 years, Wright's 1950 J.A. an...

Re: Article: "To Do Historic Preservation Right, We Need To Move Beyond Our Fixation on Historic Material"
Great article that has been a long time in coming. How would the Wright Community respond if a proposal for the conversion of the A.D. German warehouse to become apartments was put forth? The site has struggled for decades…what if a viable and well funded adaptive reuse plan was on the table, but wo...

Re: Favorite Unbuilt Design?
The Maginel Barney cottage was notable in my view as not having a defined entry, as most of Wright’s work does. Presumably, one approaches the cottage, makes their way to the terrace and starts looking in windows or is directed by the lady of the house as which French door is the one to use. Possibl...

Call him an architect.
I enjoyed having the opportunity to briefly chat with Charles about the Carlson house and the desert shelter he built in the early 1970’s during a FLWBC tour in Phoenix.

Re: Article: 'Fallingwater tops list of most loved buildings in the United States'
It is not uncommon to see images of Wright buildings, Fallingwater in particular, presented mirrored. I recall sitting through a slide show by a fellow student in a seminar in which about a third of the images were reversed....never signature views, mostly interiors. If the instructor noticed, nothi...

Anyone want to have a meaningful discussion on the possibilities of designing visually and functionally successful additions to architecturally strong designs?

Re: Video: "Why 4 New York Museums Were Designed So Differently | Architectural Digest"
It should be noted the elevation view and the photos of the models were not accurate depictions of how they would have been viewed by 98% of the public from 5’ above the sidewalk on either side of the avenue. The upper penthouse would have been far less prominent from the sidewalk. Breuer’s building...

Re: Video: "Why 4 New York Museums Were Designed So Differently | Architectural Digest"
A great video, thanks for sharing it. The coverage of the Guggenheim was limited only to the main gallery of 1959, and not the two story SW corner gallery, nor the Thanhauser wing which accommodate larger pieces. A chapter of a book about strategies for architectural design could be written on the e...

Re: For sale: Marcus Weston house - (Spring Green, WI)
For those who have Curtis Besinger’s book, Weston was a friend and pen pal to Besinger.
One of the last photos in the series shows an exposed CMU wall with an unresolved roof line. An unbuilt wing or carport perhaps?

Anyone claiming a project in the Sonoran Desert as sustainable that has a lawn and a waterfall needs to rethink their position.

Re: St Mary's Catholic Church by WWP in Alma, MI endangered
That is sad, but not surprising I suppose. Places of worship, particularly ones with such liturgically focused design and complex detailing, pose serious functional and economic challenges for adaptive reuse. The effort made by the local preservation community, the acknowledgement by the Deacon that...

From time to time, I'm approached by local or regional media to do pieces on the house.
