Topic: The Story of FLW's 1950 un-built Hall House

The story brings life to a familiar Monograph entry, and reminded me that all commissions, built or not, have a story to tell. It is touching that though the couple did not build the house, it was still a part of their lives for the rest of their lives. It seems the memories of the journey, the meet...

The easiest way to see the plan of the Loveness house and the later studio would be to purchase a copy of William Allin Storrer's "Frank Lloyd Wright Companion". (see Storrer's website http://www.franklloydwrightinfo.com) The Loveness house from the 1950's is listed with photos and a plan,...

What happened to the second photo (view of a terrace) of the mystery building posted on 1/22/07? The woods look northern; the beech tree makes me want to say VA or MD. The landscaping in the foreground is young in the photo and in a style post-1975. The building appears to be a house, though the dri...

RJH- Was the Johnson estate open recently or were you a guest of Mr. Johnson prior to January 2005? I'm looking forward to seeing the estate for myself once it opens later this year. Experiencing the scale of the place and the relationships between the buildings should be interesting as it cannot be...

I thought it might be animal related...inspired by "Eddie's dog house" at FLLW's Berger house maybe? Close inspection of the pic reveals that the dog house is constructed of weathered wood in what appears to be a northern climate; New England or the upper Midwest. Such a low-lying unfinish...

Jake. I was given a similar assignment when I was in school. You don't need elevation drawings to complete the assignment. Find a copy of "Building with Frank Lloyd Wright" by Herbert Jacobs in your library, most arch schools have it or can get it. A copy of "The Natural House" b...

Decorating aside, the house has an Albert Frey or Neutra-esque "Palm Springs-modern" feel about it that IMHO works well in the desert. The subtle geometric detail on the fascias nicely carries some of the wall panel rhythm to the roof line. The whiteness exterior panels would be a bit hars...

Two points that speak to earlier posts: 1. The school has, as part of its NAAB accredidation, been required to have faculty from a wider range of backgrounds. There have been adjunct faculty without Fellowship training since the early '90's. 2. As to the new dean's age, he is without a lot of academ...

A call to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation's William Wesley Peters Library at Taliesin West would be a good source. Also, the following is a link to a group of former Wright apprentices that put out a newsletter which in issues #5 and #6 contained a list of former apprentices. #5 contains the list ...

The Usonian Automatic system was similar enough to the '20's Textile (concrete) Blocks to be an evolution of the same system. From what I have read of accounts by those who constructed Usonian Automatics, and my own observations of the gutted Pieper house as it was being buried in a McMansion, I thi...

I recall seeing construction photos of Grady Gammage, which indicated that it was a steel frame. The concrete one sees there was precast. (I think the same is true for Corbin Education Center) I'm not sure if that was Wright's original intention, as Gammage grew out of the Baghdad opus, which would ...

The Deer Valley Rock Art Center is Bruder's little gem northwest of Phoenix. It is a visitor center to an outdoor museum of native American petroglyphs. Boomer (just north of Adelman) was mostly hidden by foliage as of 1998 when I last saw it. By prior arrangement, I was given a brief tour of the Bo...

Has anyone looked carefully at RJH's flickr album photos? In particular the last two photos taken from a substantial distance in the lake. From the perspective of these photos, the masonry and fascia details cannot be seen and the house can be viewed as a form in the greater landscape. Our tendency ...

Very off topic I realize, but to respond to jackless' question: Why should we care what Western Europe thinks? The US may someday be in a position that will require assistance from its allies. Not to back us up on another Middle Eastern misadventure, but to help us in the aftermath of a disaster or ...
