Laurie, I believe you missed an important qualifying sentence in my earlier post: But land is money in our society. Much as I detest how the dollar and an individual's right to collect as many as possible to the detriment of society as a whole is at play in much of American business, land use, and p...

Not sure Mies was always good, but he certainly was consistent...witness A link to the Elmhurst, IL Art Museum website: http://www.elmhurstartmuseum.org/mccormick-house.html The museum acquired and moved Mies' 1952 McCormick house when it was faced with demolition. Not surprisingly, it bears a close...

Financial issues relative to the tornado could have been in the mix for the Irvings that could have caused a multi-year delay...some questions: Did the Irvings suffer a loss of a house in the tornado that was somehow not insured or under insured and was still mortgaged? Time needed to settle that de...

An important part of the history of these houses is their context and juxtaposition to one another. The smaller house built as a temporary residence until the larger final house could be built, is physical remnant of the original client/owner's process and or financial condition...to separate the ho...

Neutra's early '60's visitor's center at Gettysburg battlefield used a device similar to Price Tower's as well: http://www.flickr.com/photos/edge_and_corner_wear/4437662753/in/set-72157623507849007 The fins were adjustable via worm gears and were motorized I think. Like many motorized devices of the...

Wow. An impressive amount of research in such a short time frame, at a distance, and over a weekend. Kudos, PrairieMod, Mark Hertzberg, and outside in! Local historical commissions, as Mr Harding alludes, are a mixed bag depending upon the political and sometimes moral climate of the municipality th...

Congratulations and welcome to Wright Chat. I'm glad the McCartney house has found a preservation minded new owner. Please share your experiences with us "Chatters" as you work on the house. My wife and I are gradually restoring a 1950 Wright house here in NJ, and we've found through this ...

I haven't been to the M-B showroom on Park Ave since '83 or '84. Back then there was a lot of Wright or TAA furniture: built-ins, round tables with brochures and even some round hassocks...cushions were red/orange leather, and mirrors had been mounted on most columns, perimeter walls and portions of...

Mies did assimilate to American culture in one respect: he designed an unbuilt drive-in restaurant.

I'd want to see every period photo possible of the house and scour the entire drawing file on the opus before I'd commit higher than scrap metal value for these.

outside in, do these look familiar from the docs you have seen?

I concur with myLiebermeisterAGG...Autodesk's AutoCAD seems to be the system of choice in the world I inhabit. BIM has not yet crossed my bow, but I'm sure it will. Some firms I've encountered, or more accurately, their clients, prefer MicroStation and swear by it, but AutoCAD seems to be the most c...
