Gettin' his Goff on. Seriously, the house appears from the down-slope pic to be a heavily reworked and disguised conventional house with a curved pod addition. There are interesting bits, but there is too much disorder between the bits for the house to read as a composition. Even in his most adventu...

Interesting to see the floor plan. It would seem Tafel owned the building and his "unit" included the Parlour Floor, Garden Level, and Basement. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors were each separate apartments, presumably providing him with rental income to offset his housing costs. One is led t...

In the Google Maps street view of the address, the number 14 can be read on a white block to right of the front door, the brick is painted a deep green color, and a blade sign is mounted to the wall which reads "Townhouse for Sale". Not sure of the date of the picture...it is a summer view.

One must remember that the Laurent house was designed for a resident using a wheelchair....the cabinet shown allows for the foot rests of the chair to be positioned beneath the counter. The design does appear to be MCM. A look at the original drawings would answer the question of what Wright/Talesin...

How does one access old telephone books? "Between the Lions"...The New York Public Library probably has them, possibly on microfilm or microfiche. Otherwise, a local historical society might be able advise where old phone books or city directories might be found. Last resort would be Tafe...

Wow. What an incredibly neat "intervention". I can't get over how well this actually appears to work. The Victorian elements of base, cornice, and trim are painted out as background and the new weaves its way within to become the foreground. You are right ross, unless this stayed in Tafel'...

peterm. The following is a link to some pics of a 1950 American Olean catalog: http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=86091 Not much can be seen, but it is a start. I suspect 2x2's were available then, but I know for certain that 1x1's were. Wright and the Apprentices used 1x1 tile in ...

From the article: “When Walter Cronkite came to see it, he walked in and said, “I feel Frank here,’ says Massaro with pride. The late anchorman knew Wright personally. Walter may have felt Frank, but I wonder what Frank was feeling? The picture of the adjacent original cottage clearly shows...

My understanding of the image is that it is a stylized section through the large central room of the house. The "murale" is made with maple or bass wood blocks cut to the silhouette of the roof and floor forms, which are then mounted to a black panel for display. It would make a neat perf ...

The paintings which FLLW and Mr. Meier reference are cylcorama paintings which were actually a form of entertainment/education in the 19th century. Enormous 360 degree paintings were created of famous historical, or sometimes recent, events. The paintings toured and were seen in major cities. Someti...

Kudos John, the house and article are great. Your introduction of green technology was sensitively done and will serve the house well. The kitchen you designed skillfully acknowledges that restoration to the original configuration would yield a space unworkable in a present day house, and creates so...
