Their typical eave detail of the rafters extending beyond the roof line ... anybody know how the exposed rafters are protected? Seems like sun and rain would eventually take a toll? But in all shots I've seen this wood gleams as if new.

I don't think they are obligated to restore this house to it's original condition.

Were I the absolute monarch of the architectural restoration cosmos (and happily for certain classic forms and fireplaces I am not!) I'd grant the owners of this property a very wide path in pursuit of saving this place in order to make it home.

Really, really like how this house is sited; lowered down at the edge of a ravine. Seems to me one of it's major insights.

Rail-less stone balcony. How did they pull that off. Love it.
Did I see bush hammered stone stairs?

Does the tower exist disconnected from the house? Storr says Smith delved into Jung. Wonder if the tower is related to Jung's tower, or did that come later after Smith?

Really appreciate the note on the plan that you transcribed for us. I've got to spend some time with that in or to decipher.

Yeah, that's the book I've got. The story about those years in the room with only that black stove is remarkable. His family background in Roman Catholicism, sacramental nature of matter etc, seems fairly evident too.

Is the home within 270? ... well there's a lot posted on this house already on this forum that I have not read before. Will have to catch up. Congratulations on securing the pr...

Those three points are very interesting to me. I've never considered any of them, only encountered the stopping at the edge of the city in LK's proposal for Philadelphia.

Smith was interested in Wrights "honeycomb" module type houses. Is the Gunning house based on a module?
