Don't get me wrong. The Willey House is probably in better shape today than it was just after completion of original construction. I love seeing it shine, again, almost as though it is a newly constructed house. Unfortunately for me, I was spoiled by seeing the house when Mr. Willey was in residence...

Geiger recalled a heated argument between Wes and FLW over the effect the truss system would have on the ceiling of the church. FLW insisted that the ceiling planes would be flat, and Wes countered (correctly) that there would be a slight curve to the ceiling. One day, while looking at the ceiling,...

These structural discussions bring to mind my one visit to Fallingwater. As only one of a large, scattered group, it was all but impossible to use the time available to good purpose (i.e. discussions of the structure, for instance). However, at one point I happened to be alone, near the pool on the ...

We are getting off subject ... however, be that as it may ... It was ever Mr. Wright's goal to build, if possible, a structure out of one material, only: for simplicity, to give a building a sense of structural inevitability, and as a means to help overcome the constant problem inherent in the proce...

Perhaps the photos were taken immediately following rehabilitation of the house, or shortly thereafter, in which case I can understand the barrenness evident in the photos ... and, consequently, some of my criticisms should be modified. Nevertheless, the owners should study the older photos to learn...

The Unitarian Church designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was finished in 1951 ... by the Taliesin Fellowship. It proved so successful that the congregation quickly outgrew the building, and not too long ago the congregation debated whether or not they should abandon the building and move elsewhere. Inste...

One mistake Mr. Wright never repeated was designing a living room without built-in seating. Mr. Willey once told me that after he and his first wife moved in they wrote Mr. Wright, complaining about not having anywhere to sit. A few weeks later a moving van arrived with a couple of expensive but com...
