thanks for the field guide info - I'm ordering it from Amazon. Curious, though: if it retails for $40, and Amazon sells it for $27, why do some book sellers seek $500 or $800 for the field guide? Is there a special edition?

I suppose that is straightforward. Where can I obtain the list?

Storrer numbers

The upshot is that many people rely on the Storrer numbering system because it is widely available and inexpensive. If the market economy has better ideas, here's where they can build their better mousetrap.

Unfortunately, as new editions of the books are published, there is no explanation for deleted numbers. I conversed a year or two ago with Prof. Storrer and included his explanations with some of the listings ("former S.__") on the website www.flwright.us. I have found his numbering system...

not sure if these help - from earlier edition of the book: S.232 was the Fallingwater guesthouse alterations S.122 was Gridley Barn (demolished) in Batavia IL S.413 was McBean in Rochester MN (Erdman prefab #2) - if I recall, all the prefabs were regrouped into a single number with decimal .1, .2, e...

detached garages

I recall seeing only one detached garage with a Usonian, and I believe it is was added later (Harper residence, S.329, St. Joseph Michigan, http://www.flwright.us/FLW329.htm). Whether detached or attached/enclosed, I would think that either approach would be inconsistent with the financial and archi...

Garages

I have found the FLW garages to be a fascinating sidebar to his houses. On my last visit to Oak Park (fall 2009), I traveled the alleyways to review these fascinating structures. Many are accessible, and you can often see three sides of the garage. They are a microcosm of the larger homes, offering ...

thanks

Thanks for posting this article. When I visited the area, I was frustrated by the wooded lot. It's great to see some close-up photos!

Oak Park

Next time you visit Oak Park, spend some time in the alleyways! You get to see the FLW-designed garages, the backs of the houses, and fences!

Prius

I'm not from Iowa - I'm from Detroit. But I'll bet you see a lot more Japanese nameplates on cars in California. Electric cars also carry a political/social angle that Iowans might not embrace. See, e.g., the South Park episode entitled "Smug Alert."

I have exterior photos of the house on my website:

http://www.flwright.us/FLW166.htm

I discussed this house with Prof. Storrer, and he reached the conclusion that it was Mahoney's design after all. As I recall, the floorplan was the deciding factor.

LEGO

Brilliant work! I wonder if any other FLW structures have been modeled in Lego - you would think so, given all the complicated buildings that have been built by Lego aficionados. Legoland is spectacular (with gigantic recreations of famous cities), and if you catch a train show with a Lego layout, t...

It's not there anymore. Tom Monoghan sold off the collection when he got out of his rich man hobbies - Detroit Tigers ownership/car collecting/pizza mogul/owner of island - to devote his life to religious endeavors. I visited the collection (As well as his car collection and Tigers museum) in the ea...

Michigan

My website shows street views of most of the Michigan houses - and notes which ones are shrouded in trees. I agree the May house is worth the visit.
